Virtual Reality Environment with Haptic Feedback Thimble for Post Spinal Cord Injury Upper-Limb Rehabilitation

Cervical spinal cord injury is damage to the that causes temporary or permanent changes in body functions below site of injury. In particular, impairment upper limbs limits patient’s autonomy execution activities daily living. This paper illustrates use a low-cost robot with virtual reality platform for limb rehabilitation cervical patients. Vibration and pressure haptic feedback sensations are provided thanks custom-made thimble device. The consists three different games developed Unity. They provide user opportunity interact scene using free hands data collected by hand tracking system. During therapy session, quantitative about motor performance collected. Each environment can be modified settings according patients’ needs. A proof concept was performed both healthy subjects injured patients evaluate its usability. saved during sessions analyzed validate importance stored therapists control recovery process.
